Down Under Style
DOWN UNDER STYLE
by Bevan Jee
Welcome to my first Australian scene report for Steelo Magazine,
lets not waste time and get right into it...
DJ Q-Bert of The Invisible Scratch Pickles made his way down under
for the Australian Turntable Dragon Tour presented by the Bomb. He
perfomed shows in three states in early June and the tour was a
success. We are going to do some more tours in 1997, so everyone in
Australia should be looking out for that.. no doubt.
There is a rumor going around that some of the members of Rocksteady
Crew are coming to Perth to perform and judge a B-Boy Jam happening
in April of 1997.. stay tuned for more information. Another rumor is
that current world DMC champion DJ Noize will be touring before the
end of the year.
The second installment in Bomb Australia's B-Boy Kingdom Hip-Hop
Jams happened in early August featuring Sydney group The Brethren
who performed tracks from their new CD "Big Brother".. other
performances came courtesy of rappers; Scuta, Raman, 2Dee,
Smokescreen. B-Boys; Rohan and Rely, and Graffiti Artists; Luck,
Two, LKR, Roms and Mistery from Sydney.
Freedom Of Expression was a festival that happened during October
documenting The History and Future of The Australian Hip-Hop
Culture. It was put together by Australian Organization Smart Arts.
The festival wrapped up on the 12th of October with a hip-hop jam
featuring performances by interstate act Curse ov Dialect, Warcry,
DJ's Waxmaster Wayne, Myself, B-Cut and B-Boys Rohan, Mpire, Rely,
Scan, Busk and Morgan from Sydney.
One of Australia's most talented DJ's Waxmaster Wayne has just
released a tape bringing back that old school flavor called B-Boy
Electro Jam, I recommend it to all the diehard breakers out there.
Be on the look out for new releases from these Australian Hip-Hop
acts; Warcry will release a follow up to their debut The Art of
War, Curse ov Dialect, B-Boy Allstars/TRP, producer Lioncub, Just
Us, Metabass N' Breath and Ser Reck (formerly of Def Wish Cast)
Heard about a new B-Boy crew that is forming in Brisbane called
Cyber Force stay tuned...
DJ Cash Money's Guess Who's Coming To Dinner Australian tour
turned into Guess Who's Not Coming To Dinner when Cash Money
didn’t show up . The night went on and I got to check out Australian
DMC Champion (92, 93, 96) KC. His "I got another funk break for
you... hit it!" routine was absolutely mind blowing.
Fugees are touring Australia in December but I am a little
disappointed that there are no local or interstate hip-hop support
acts, just some local and interstate R&B/Pop artists. There is so
much dope hip-hop talent out here in Australia willing to support an
act of this calibre... oh well, you all know how it goes. There is a
strong rumour that De La Soul will be joining the tour, so lets keep
out fingers crossed.
